What is with America and using random variably sized shit to create units of measurement?! Automakers, when you build a sportscar and want to use an object in order to hide the fact that the volume is small, use a meaningful item. My suggestion, 22 inch roller bags . The largest carryon size you can take onto any US domestic flight from any airline. Golf clubs can go in the passenger seat or be brought in a different vehicle. If a customer complains they can’t fit three sets of clubs inside their 2-seat sports car, let them know about the great lease deals you have for Macan, Cayenne, and Panamera.
If you can’t fit two carryon bags per passenger in a vehicle, then that’s a fault! Your car goes away but your cargo stays? Let’s not become answers to a riddle, kin.
I feel like these two pictures sum up the comparison between Jaguar and Porsche.

To their credit, Lincoln has only ever used dead bodies as a unit of measurement.

Car and Driver has used cases of beer as a unit or measurement here and there over the years, which always made me smile. I think all vans and trucks should be rated in number of sheets of 4x8'-3/4" plywood.

Typically reserved for a long bed pickup, unfortunately.

Yeah back when most trucks had 6'ish boxes you could haul 4x8 sheets of stuff pretty easily with the tailgate down. Now with some of this super short boxes on crew cabs that isn’t really an option.

I think it all comes down to the market for 1/2 ton trucks, and smaller-sized trucks in general. They’ve become the new-age full-size luxury car, rather than being the workhorses they used to be.

Two carry-on bags each? For a total of four? Sounds like you pack too much stuff. One carry-on, and one small bag that fits beneath the seat!!!!
(I can get two carry-ons in the frunk, and my cart bag in the back of my 986 Boxster. Or two smaller carry golf bags....just gotta take the drivers out and lay them in first. Still amazes me how much shit I can fit in that car for a road trip.)

This! Loads of these trucks are sold with bench seats front and back, a column shifter, RWD and a V8. Throw a cap on the bed and you have the current equivalent of the 3-box Crown Vic/Town Car. It just rides higher.

I use duffel bags as a measurement.

I measure seats in greyhounds capacity. Even my LS has a one greyhound backseat

The youtuber AlexOnAutos has used himself as a unit of measurement, but now he also uses roller bags:

I figured this measure would insure a set of golf clubs or larger items can fit in the same area. Rather more space than needed over room for only two overhead stored luggage, the passenger’s backpack, and my Gucci bag (it’s a mens tote).

Roller bags didn’t exist when the golf bag (or, alternatively beer case/milk crate) units of measurement were codified by the auto rags. It’s a legacy thing.

I’ve never understood bucket seats in full-size trucks, ever. In the ‘90a, Dodge Rams (back when they were under the Dodge nameplate) had full bench seats with a center section that folded down. Since then, though, it seems like the entire industry moved to bucket seats up front, a move I’ve never understood.

I also found it funny that they used a set of golf clubs and a bag from 1977 for the picture. Clearly they don’t play much.

The 40/20/40 front bench is still available, but I have no idea what the take rate is. I suspect it is higher on work trucks than personal vehicles. We have a small fleet of Ram 2500/3500's at work (2008-2015 models) and they all have the bench.

Meanwhile the Previa could fit them with the rear hatch closed. Had to take out the middle seat of course, and probably couldn’t take too many before you hit the weight limit.

My car has a diagram on the trunk lid showing how to stow golf bags.

Not long bed, standard length bed. All smaller lengths are abominations.

Found the truck purist. However, shorter beds do reduce utility of the truck, I agree completely.
